Boring Blog Posts

So my wife thinks my posts are boring.
"I know," I say.  "They're just about me making this book and album."
"But they're boring," she says.
"Fuck," I say (or maybe I was just thinking it).  "I'm not PrivateSecret Diary - and that's not a fucking blog anyway - it's a collection of very short, very funny stories."
"Just write about something interesting," she says.
And I remember an actual breathing human being in 1998 who asked me to put the color red into his website, and when I asked what shade he was thinking of, he says, "You choose.  Just pick a good red."
To which I replied, "Fuck." Or maybe I was just thinking it.

mini-launch of robashcom.com

So I re-named my test file to index.php.  If you don't know what the heck that means (good for you, first of all...), "index" is the file a browser looks for first when going to a website.  So, while "testindex.php" was safe from anyone who didn't actually know the exact spelling, "index.php" is out in the open for the hoardes of people online constantly looking for new information on Rob Ashcom.  All you have to do is...http://robashcom.com

And thus it begins...

Final Stretch

Tired shoulders, aching neck, inflamed carpals....  But things are shaping up.  Still need a design for print-on-the-cd.  Finalize the back cover of the CD and the book.  Then decide who will manufacture/ship the CDs - CreateSpace or CDBaby?  The 8-ball says....

The Deadline Approaches

How many posts have started with "the deadline's looming...I should be doing my work..."?

Well actually, I AM working on the media release....  But of course not at the moment since I'm at work-work...

The novel appears to be typeset at last, though I may have lost some spots of italicized internal dialogue (or "muttering").  Meaning I lost the italics through the magic of Adobe Indesign may it rot in hell -- not that I lost the muttering bits.  My artistic skin has thickened to the degree that I don't give a rat's ass for the small details.  The cover's pretty; fuck the rest....  I wonder if I can say that on Blogger?  We'll find out soon enough when I stop blathering.

Mixes still going, though the last mile is once again threatening to break my mind/body/spirit. I will post a page for friends to vote on the order of the songs  appearing on the cd as well as their most/least favorites.  I need some objectivity, people!

Coding the website now.  Fuck off!!

Twitter or Blogger?

Was thinking for a while that I'd use a Twitter feed on my website (currently under construction...go away...) for a "blog." Pretty much just because I found the code to do it. Now I'm looking at blogger, and since it is prettier, I think I'll go with it. Also, I re-read some pithy posts I made here :)

So update on Media Release 2009:
The novel was finished and typeset, but the font appeared too large, so I have to re-tweak (some manual page numbering crap is dependent on the number of pages which will decrease now with the smaller font). Still have 2/3 weeks before my second trial copy of Adobe Indesign expires. Woo-hoo!

Music is coming along as well. Phat mixes all around (thanks to Tchad Blake and Michael Brauer). Need to get them together and do the final mastering & sequencing. No sleep for a week or 2. Halloween is my soft deadline/wedding anniversary.

Mixing

Mixed until 2:30am last night/morning. Alternated between 3 songs: Queen for a Day, Too Long, and Not the One. The "image" in the remixes has extended dramatically. It just sounds bigger. It is a tough line to walk, however, not screwing some detail up at the same time. Listened to the mixes in the car this morning and the QFAD mix starts about halfway through the song. God hates me.

I need to free up $100. The damn demo of "The Glue" has timed out and I'm completely addicted. The greatest bus compressor ever! http://www.cytomic.com/Beta/The_Glue_Beta_Info.html

Inspiration

So I got a real burst of inspiration from all the postings by Tchad Blake at gearslutz.com
For a while I've been thinking very technically about the tracks I'm mixing - how to fix little problems here and there, what fx to use, master bus compressors, argh$#$#@! Tchad made me realize that mixing should be as much of an art form as the performing, writing, etc. Duh. But it gives me license to really grab hold of the music and shake it like a dog. Stop thinking like a technician about how to accomplish something, and start doing things to the mix regardless of the tools involved. So far I've pretty much just fucked up the current, near-perfect state of my mixes, but I'm not worried. :)

Which leads me to thinking about the next album. Now I know all to painfully well what I need the tracks to sound like, i.e. the sound that is initially recorded before any mixing. I would like to use almost no EQ or compression on the next one and have it pop like any big-budget mix. There it is, my secret desire: to face the whole world (wife, family, friends, music pros, and anyone else in the whole fucking world), play my track, and just fucking gloat. "Suck on that, motherfucker." I want to be the poster child for lo-budget recording. I want bands calling me up, begging me to produce their next album. Ah...but wishes ain't fishes - they're a lot more slippery.
